In partnership between The Cooper Union and The Museum of Modern Art, this project is one of seven models of Architects of Liberation, an exhibition celebrating the architecture born out of the liberation of several West African countries from European occupation and colonization. Centre International du Commerce Extérieur du Sénégal (C.I.C.E.S.) is a tropical modernist landmark located in Dakar, Senegal. Designed by Jean-François Lamoureux and Jean-Louis Marin and completed in 1974, C.I.C.E.S. compromises of 13 pavilions and a convention center. The crop for this 1/8” scale model was determined by centering the 7 Councils pavilions to highlight the triangular logics of the seven structures and the neighboring expo spaces. From the columns, roofs, and support buildings, the triangle became the iconic architectural motif of the project. The model measures 5’-4” by 6’-0” [162.6 cm x 182.9 cm] and was constructed out of basswood, plywood, wood veneer, 3D-printed wood filament, and steel. The model was constructed alongside Jakob Albanese, Vasily Chumakov, Daniel Jang, Jasper Meikle, and Kevin Yang. Documentation by Jasper Meikle.
